About AKCNC

For nearly twenty years, our nephrology physicians have been proud to call Rocky Mount, Roanoke Rapids, Tarboro, and the surrounding communities home. What started as a small group committed to bringing specialized kidney care to Eastern North Carolina has grown into a team that now serves thousands of patients across multiple counties, but our mission hasn’t changed. We’re here because rural communities deserve the same quality of nephrology care as anywhere else, and we intend to keep proving that every day.
Why Rural Nephrology Matters
Research on kidney care in rural and underserved regions tells a consistent story: specialists are harder to find outside major cities, referrals often lag, and patients frequently travel long distances , sometimes over 100 miles , just to see a nephrologist. National workforce data reinforces this, showing that while larger metro areas are well-supplied with kidney specialists, rural markets remain significantly underserved. These gaps in access are linked to delayed diagnoses, later dialysis starts, and worse outcomes overall.
We started this practice, and we continue it today, because we believe geography shouldn’t determine the quality of care a patient receives. Bringing dedicated, full-time nephrology coverage to this region remains the driving purpose behind our work.
What We Do
Our physicians provide comprehensive inpatient and outpatient nephrology coverage across three hospitals and one long-term acute care (LTAC) facility, along with multiple dialysis units spanning several counties. That means whether a patient is in the clinic, on the hospital floor, or receiving dialysis, they’re being cared for by the same familiar team, a continuity of care that builds trust, catches problems earlier, and keeps everyone on the same page.
We work hand-in-hand with primary care physicians and other consulting specialists throughout the region, because we know good nephrology care doesn’t happen in isolation. Coordinated care is better care, and we take that partnership seriously.
Committed to What’s Next
Kidney disease management continues to evolve, and we stay current with the latest treatment guidelines and evidence-based practices so our patients benefit from modern, informed care, not outdated protocols. We’re also strong advocates for preventive care, believing that catching kidney disease early and managing it proactively can spare patients from more serious complications down the road.
We’re especially passionate about expanding access to home dialysis and transplant options — therapies that offer patients more independence and often better outcomes, but that are too often underutilized in rural areas. We work to make sure our patients know these options exist and have real support in pursuing them.
Our Commitment
None of this happens without hard work, and our team shows up for it, clinic visits, hospital rounds, dialysis unit checks, and everything in between, day after day, for two decades and counting. We don’t take for granted the trust this community has placed in us. We’re grateful for it, and we intend to keep earning it, one patient at a time.
